Welcome to my fourth newsletter.
I have started a series of short blogs on how I work in relation to general applied techniques, particularly prop and model making, collecting and working with plastics, entitled 'creative thoughts'. The first three are already posted, and all are inspired by Adam Savage and Norm’s Tested.com. Mainly set in the workshop, they discuss build techniques, background info and general workshop practice, from which I have found and describe a few parallels to my own creative process. The model kit reviews and filmset prop unboxing are great. I particularly like the discussions on model making, especially the episode when Savage builds a model of a transporter vehicle from a Moebius illustration. I will do something on scratch-building soon, and attempt to make something from scratch myself with a piece of found plastic.
I now have my ‘StrawsSardegna’ and prints of it for sale through Saatchiart.com. I don’t expect the original to sell in a hurry, but the prints should be high quality and are available framed or unframed in various sizes, and produced and shipped by Saatchiart itself. Soon I will be adding more works hoping to get into collectors favourites lists.
On my own website I have also created a new section with some works for sale to the right of the menu header.
A new series of works in polystyrene has three pieces in its own section, one with led lighting. There will be more of these next year and the intention is to create more complex geometry with the hot wire and greatly expand the colour palette. These works are currently produced from found and recycled material, and I will continue to collect and recycle packaging for the ‘polyvision’ type compositions, but I also want to build a ‘colourpolyfield’ from new material to concentrate on a slick, minimal finish.
There is another new page in the portfolio section with a gallery of every piece on the website for quick visual searching and linking to relevant pages where they there may be more info and more images. It is listed as 'all works' at the top of the portfolio dropdown menu.
In the blog there is a new story about a family who retrofitted a Playmobil ship to travel the world's oceans equipped with GPS tracker. I like it a lot from an scientific angle, and also because I have made a work from one of these toys. Also I have thought about sending a collection of smartie tops back to the sea with trackers to see where they went some years ago, but presumed the trackers were either too big or too expensive?
